Ca y est

It happened. Finally, I have the complete Marseille experience.

Elena and I were walking from an appointment in a neighborhood we had visited many times. Yes, it is dirty, but I have never been afraid. But as we were just moments away from the bus stop, I heard the woman right in front of me scream a word a will not repeat. A young kid, maybe 15, had reached out and grabbed her gold necklace and surprisingly, walked calmly away to his friend with a small motorbike. He wasn't even in a hurry. I literally could have grabbed the chain back from him from how close we were. The woman and her friend, about 45, were just sitting outside the preschool they work at smoking a cigarette. She ran inside crying to call the police. I tend to ignore people, which I feel makes me indiscreet. Elena, however, said the boys looked strangely at us as we walked by. Luckily we were wearing any jewelry. It was strange being a witness, I have heard of this happening so many times. Also luckily, there isn't much more crime here than theft and running red lights.
