Ladies and Gentelmen, Thank you.

Today we went to Cassis, a lovely little town close to Marseille. It lies just underneath the highest cliffs in Western Europe, which we stood upon as we watched the sunset. Majestic.

I worked with a new volunteer today. A girl from Marseille that just recently converted to Islam. She is currently doing the Ramadan, which is a month of fasting (they can eat when the sun is set). That makes things hard for her because she can't eat, drink, or smoke all day; so I try to make our visits condensed and I put off lunch until later so we can finish later. That way she can go home to rest when the weather is at its hottest. We managed to find quite a few similarities between certain religious traditions. For a young girl of 18 to find religion and put her whole energy into it, I am very impressed with her.

One of the ladies we saw today was in the hospital. If I ever have to work in a hospital like that, I will quit the profession! She sat up in bed wearing nothing but a diaper and a hospital gown drapped over her front. Her feet were swollen and scabbed. And yet, she was happy to see us. She would prefer to be well, that her food have more salt, and her grandchildren take care of her. But she said that we were nice to have come from so far to see her. I was happy to be there, at the bedside of someone who had no one to look after her when she had nothing to do all day but sit in her bed and think about the pain. . .
