every day a little wiser

Funny how education changes your perspective on various aspects of life.

For example, today in french composition my professor mentioned a medication that led a lot of women to have deformed babies. I don't remember the name. It was interesting to me though, that we had discussed the same medication in organic chemistry. Both very different aspects (cultural repercussions vs the chemical stereo-chemistry that makes it cause defects), but both applicable and interesting.

Second example: education helps to dispel false rumors and misconceptions. In physiology, I learned the truth behind lactic acid - it doesn't cause soreness after exercise. Your muscles get rid of that within a few minutes. In french civilization, we spent a lot of time on the "dark ages." Why are they dark? Who knows. Someone during the renaissance decided it was so, when in reality the general public was probably more religious, dedicated to God, etc than during the Renaissance. Theirs was a time just like any other with family, sickness, war, laughter, art, and so on. The only difference is that they didn't model their society after ancient Greece and Rome.
In New Testament, we discussed Mary and Martha. Often we attribute the chastisement, "She hath chosen the better part" to Christ but that isn't at all what He said. "She hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken from her." Christ was defending Mary from the accusation of Martha, not criticizing either of them. Both of their forms of service were acceptable to Him, as long as they did not judge one another.

I just love learning.

  1. i remember learning about that drug as well! it's so weird to me when things in classes overlap. it happens so often too... in classes that don't seem to have anything to do with each other, too.
